In recent weeks, drug-resistant staph infections have been making the headlines. Top US doctors are now calling staphylococcus aureus bacteria as the cockroach of bacteria due to its ability to lurk in various places and spread easily clinging on unwashed hands.

The culprit is MRSA, or methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, which is a form of the most common staph family of germs. Statistics reveal that about one in every three people carries staph aureus bacteria in their noses, and about one million people carry the MRSA type.

Over time, germs evolve to withstand treatment. Most staph is no longer treatable by the granddaddy of antibiotics, penicillin. By the 1960s, staph also began developing resistance to a narrow-spectrum antibiotic, methicillin.

While MRSA is not a new problem, public anxiety about bacterial infection is. But the recent turn of events should not trigger any panic as this isn't something just floating around in the air, said Dr. Julie Gerberding, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Staph infections occur only during close contact like sharing towels and razors, or rolling on the wrestling mat or football field with open wounds that are not protected with bandages. And according to Gerberding, MRSA is preventable largely by common-sense hygiene.

Soap and water is the cheapest intervention we have, and it's one of the most effective, Gerberding told a hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Diseases caused by MRSA are mostly skin infections, such as boils and abscesses. But it can sometimes spread to cause life-threatening blood infections. Last October, it's been reported that the first national estimate of serious MRSA infections reached 94,000 a year. It's not clear how many people die, but one estimate put the MRSA death toll at more than 18,000, slightly higher than U.S. deaths from AIDS.

But the death of a 17-year-old Virginia high school student triggered a wave of reports of MRSA infections in different schools which prompted lawmakers to pepper Gerberding with the following questions:

Should schools close for cleaning if a student gets MRSA? Gerberding said that it's not necessary. Bleach and a list of other germicides can be used in routine cleaning of areas and equipment where bacteria cluster and thrive.

There's no need to go in and disinfect a whole school, because that isn't how this organism is transmitted, she said.

How worried should parents be? According to Gerberding, some 200 children a year will get serious MRSA, and the vast majority will be treated successfully. Community-spread MRSA is still easily treated by many other routine antibiotics. So wash and bandage cuts, and seek prompt medical care if they show signs of infection.
Most outbreaks of community-spread MRSA occur not in schools but in prisons, where inmates share toiletries and don't use soap, or the lack of it.

Should every patient entering a hospital be tested for MRSA, and isolated if they harbor it? Some hospitals have begun that, but current guidelines call for that step only if hospitals fail to reduce MRSA infections by less drastic means, Gerberding said.

Gerberding's concern is that patients in isolation get less care. Doctors and nurses check on them less. They get more bed sores which makes the body prone to other life-threatening germs.

The biological conundrum is that hospital-based MRSA is more common, vulnerable to fewer antibiotics than the strain spread in communities, and those already-ill patients are more likely to die from it. Yet, the community strain of MRSA may be somewhat stronger, possibly explaining why otherwise healthy people sometimes succumb.

It's a strain called USA300 that penetrates the skin and cause key immune cells like the white blood cells to explode, setting off a chain inflammation reaction, Gerberding explained. Unlike most hospital MRSA, USA300 also produces a toxin known as PVL, and scientists are furiously investigating its role.

Invention of new antibiotics may help fight MRSA, but the fact that germs will always evolve make doctors believe that going back to the basics of washing our hands clean and keeping our wounds covered remain to be our best defense against bacterial infections.

Some examples of valid IP addresses are - 1.123.150.243, 35.35.36.10, 240.216.1.80

There is also a new standard for IP addresses that is slowly being launched called IPV6 (IP version 6). IPV6 numbers look quite different from our current IP addresses.

An example of an IPv6 IP address is - 2001:0db8:85a3:08d3:1319:8a2e:0370:7334

You will notice each it is much longer with MANY more possible variations. The new IP system is designed to give us enough IP addresses so that we will not run out of unique IP addresses any time in the foreseeable future.

So why do we need IP addresses? Quite simply, an IP address is like your physical home address. It designates a specific computer that is connected to the internet. Every computer connected to the internet has an IP address. This is necessary for it to send and receive information.

When you type in a website name, for example mine, that name is translated into an IP address that is then used to "find" my site. In the current set of IP addresses, going from left to right, the first "octet" is the most broad, with each successive octet getting more and more granular or specific.

To explain that a bit better.

134 - is VERY broad
134.125 - is still quite broad, but getting more specific
134.125.244 - is getting more specific and probably refers to a specific web host.
134.125.244.1 - is as specific as you can get and refers to a specific computer

You will often hear different classes such as class A, class B, and class C talked about when dealing with IP addresses. Below I've given some examples of what people are referring to when talking about classes.

134.254.XXX.XXX

It's often easiest to think of IP addresses as physical addresses, with the Class A octet being similar to country, Class B, being a city in that country, Class C being a street in that city, and the last octet being a specific house on that street.

So, by looking above you should be able to see that when some talks about a Class A IP address they are referring to the first "octet" and when they say that two IP addresses are on different Class A subnets, it simply means the first set of numbers are different.

So for example

255.123.124.255
34.123.124.255

Are on different Class A's. While the rest of the IP addresses are the same, because they are on different Class As, they are VERY far apart (remember, Class A is the most broad).

The same goes for Class B. Class B refers to the second octet of numbers. When someone says that two IP addresses are on different Class B's it simply means that the the second octet's of each IP is different. The IPs may be on the same Class A or it may be different, but the second Octet of numbers is different. To better explain...look below.

34.34.124.255

In the above example, the first two IP addresses are on the same Class A, but different Class B's. The third IP address, has the same Class B number (34), but because the first Octet is different, it is also on a different Class B ( as with physical addresses, two countries can have the same city names, but they are still different cities).

For class C we are looking at the third octet.

255.123.124.255
255.123.34.255
34.42.124.255

Again, the first two above are on different Class C's, while the third has the same class C number as the first, but it's first and second octets are different, so it's also on a different Class C.

I hope the above makes since to you. I've tried to give plenty of examples to make it clear no matter what your tech background is.

The good news is, that you hardly ever have to mess with IP addresses. When you get a web hosting account for your domain name, your host will assign your domain name an IP address. You often don't even HAVE to know it. Generally your host will set all this up for you without you having to understand any of it. From that point on, when someone types in your domain name, that name will then be converted to your assigned IP address and voila...your visitor winds up at your site.

This condition is called secondary hypothyroidism and tertiary hypothyroidism, respectively. Meanwhile, subclinical hypothyroidism refers to the condition where there is a decreased serum TSH levels, indicating hypothyroidism, but have regular levels of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormone deficiency can also occur during birth which is called congenital hypothyroidism. When left without treatment, this can result in growth failure and mental retardation. Hypothyroidism is also a common condition among domestic dogs.

The treatment for this condition is a long term treatment of synthetic levothyroxine (T4). It is ingested in once a day dosage, though it demands greater doses for children. People with a history of heart problems and even those who are suspected of being at high risk aren't recommended for this medication as it can certainly worsen their heart condition. The medication should be frequently checked if the correct amount of thyroid is taken. Excessive thyroid treatment can be quite harmful as it might trigger heart palpitations, increased blood pressure, and can contribute to osteoporosis.

The more preferred type of emergency contraceptive pill is the progestin-only pill. On average, reduces the risk of having an accidental pregnancy by eighty-nine percent. Effectivity increases to ninety-five percent when taken twenty-four hours after having intercourse.

Although helpful, these medications also come with side effects, these side effects include: nausea, vomiting, breast-tenderness, fatigue, abdominal pain, irregular bleeding or spotting, headaches, and in some cases, dizziness. Most women prefer using the progestin-only pill as it has relatively lesser side effects than that of the combined estrogen and progestin emergency birth control pill. Using emergency contraceptive pills is generally safe as it does not bear any harmful effect to an already growing baby inside a mother's womb. Also, keep in mind that even if these pills are effective, they will not protect you against sexually transmitted disease.

Obtaining emergency birth control pills is generally easy. For women seventeen years and below, emergency contraceptive pills can be bought on a prescription basis. But for women 18 years and older, these are approved for sale even without prescription at any drugstore, all that is required is an id to prove your age.
